Root planing is to remove plaque and other impurities that stick to the root position under the gums thoroughly. The method is similar to conventional scaling, with the difference being that a typical scaling removes stains on the teeth that emerge from the gums. However, rooting removes about 3 millimeters of stains under the gums.
